Book Review: “Long Shadows” by David Baldacci

David Baldacci’s 7th installment in the Memory Man series, “Long Shadows,” brings back the unforgettable Amos Decker, a former NFL player turned FBI agent with a perfect memory and synesthesia. This action-packed thriller delves deep into a complex murder case, intertwined with Decker’s personal crises, making it a compelling read for fans and newcomers alike.

In “Long Shadows,” Amos Decker returns to investigate the brutal murders of federal judge Julia Cummins and her bodyguard Alan Draymont in an exclusive gated community in Florida. The case is particularly challenging, as Cummins had no apparent enemies and there were no signs of forced entry. Decker, grappling with the recent suicide of a close friend and a life-changing personal issue, must use all his skills to solve the mystery. He is also adjusting to working with a new partner, Special Agent Frederica “Freddie” White. I find their partnership as lacking a bit on dynamics, although they had their moments that showed potential for future stories.

I have to say that I read 300 pages in the span of a couple of days, as I caught a flu and was forced to rest at home. My brain was working overtime, getting entangled in the complex plot, to the point that anytime I would go to sleep, I would have fever dreams of me working the case with Decker or, at points, being Decker himself. Baldacci’s plot always added many more layers than my imagination could fathom. However, I have to say that I realized (spoiler alert) Tyler’s alibi issues much faster than Decker himself, which in many ways is quite disappointing. Also, while on one hand, the story was realistic, on the other hand, I would go as far as saying there is about a zero percent chance it will happen in real life. In that sense, I feel like Baldacci was experimenting with his thriller writing formula, trying to think outside the box, but ultimately failing to do so.

“Long Shadows” offers a gripping, emotionally charged story that combines Baldacci’s signature complex plots with deep character development. Fans of police procedurals will appreciate the detailed investigative work, while thriller enthusiasts will enjoy the fast-paced action and numerous twists. The dynamic between Decker and his new partner, Freddie White, adds a fresh dimension to the series, promising exciting future installments.

Despite some shaky aspects, the novel’s strengths in storytelling and emotional depth shine through, ensuring that it remains a compelling thriller.
